Parasite Control

Intestinal Worms In Cats & Dogs

Regular worming is an essential part of good pet ownership. Intestinal worms live in the gastrointestinal system of cats and dogs and include hookworm, roundworm, whipworm and tapeworm. They can cause severe diarrhoea and disease, especially in puppies and kittens.

Usually worming is done with a simple tablet. Call Lake Road Vet Clinic to find out what products we recommend.

Heartworm Prevention in Dogs

Heartworm is the disease that nightmares are made of! Spread by mosquitoes, the worms can grow up to 30cm long and become lodged in your dog’s heart, eventually causing heart failure and death.

Prevention of heartworm is one of the most important things you must do for your dog – curing heartworm is rarely successful. Note that intestinal “all wormer” tablets do NOT protect against heartworm.

At Lake Road Vet in Kooringal we recommend an annual injection for your dog to protect against heartworm, but other products available include oral medication and a topical spot product.

Fleas

Fleas are the MOST COMMON external parasite we find on dogs and cats from Wagga Wagga and surrounds. They cause intense itching and hair loss, and may also trigger skin allergies or transmit other parasites to your dog.

Flea prevention involves a monthly oral tablet orspot on treatment – call us to make sure you use the right product. BEWARE as pyrethrin-based flea treatments are toxic to cats.

Paralysis Ticks

Although the dreaded paralysis tick does not frequent Wagga Wagga, we have a number of patients return from holidays along the east coast of Australia with an unwelcome boarder. Once a tick attaches to your pet’s skin it becomes engorged with blood and injects a potent toxin that causes muscle paralysis – this can cause death if the muscles that help your pet breathe become paralysed.

The great news is prevention is available at Lake Road Vet, it can be given before your holiday, and depending on the product it can provide up to 3 months protection against ticks. There are oral and topical treatments available to protect your pet from ticks.

Help With Tablets

Guess what! We know how hard it can be to tablet your own pets, especially when it comes to parasite control. At Lake Road Vet we are happy for you to bring your beloved pet down to the clinic for one of our friendly nurses to tablet them for you, all for just the cost of the parasite prevention. No need to book an appointment, however please call ahead to let us know when you are coming.

Reminders

If you can never remember the last time you wormed your pet or when they are due for flea treatment again, you are in luck. At Lake Road Vet we automatically set up a reminder for you and your pets when you purchase the parasite prevention. This can be tailored to individual pets or combined for all of them. We can remind you when its time to give the one you have at home and give you a heads up when you need to come back into the clinic and buy some more.

Call our friendly vet staff today to ensure your pet is protected against parasites – we can recommend the best products.
